Godfrey v. Demon Internet

May 14, 1999

Canadian Internet Service Providers should take note of a recent British decision which held that an ISP can be held liable for defamation for an anonymous message stored on its newsgroup server despite a law protecting the ISP for innocent dissemination of libel.  In this case the ISP was warned three times about the content without removing it.  The ISP is appealing the ruling.
